What a concrete paver is — and why the system matters

A concrete paver is a precast modular unit laid over a prepared base, with jointing between units. Its defining advantage over a poured slab is that it works as a system: it accommodates movement at its joints rather than cracking, distributes load through interlock, and can be lifted and re-set for service access. The main types

  • Paving stones — the largest family, spanning modular formats, planks and multi-stone sets for driveways, courtyards and landscapes. The design-led core of most residential and commercial hardscape.
  • Paving slabs — larger-format units for patios, plazas and walkways, including tactile slabs for accessibility.
  • Cobblestones — small-format units for pathways, heritage-adjacent settings and detailed landscape work.

Grades and standards — what IS 15658 means

Indian concrete paving blocks are specified to IS 15658, the national standard for precast concrete paving blocks. The relevant number for the specifier is the grade — the compressive strength — which ISTAKA manufactures across M40 to M55, with ±2mm dimensional tolerance.
